Not yet the final sprint for the organisers maybe, but it’s already time to considerably pick up the pace. The ticket office, the reception of the various delegations, the fitting out of the POPB … Jean Gracia, general manager of the organisation committee, gives us a round-up.

Amid discovery and confirmation
A month to the day until the European Athletics Indoor Championships at Paris-Bercy, the continental athletics landscape is gradually taking shape. Naturally the main championships haven’t yet taken place as they are scheduled over the course of February. However, several stars already announced for the Paris meet have made the most of the initial winter meetings to take pole position in the current rankings and show what they’re made of. The start of the winter has also been marked by the discovery of a handful of new, less familiar faces, who are preparing to shake up the hierarchy. We review the fixtures and the forces at play.

The “athletics family” will really have something to celebrate in Bercy
Paradox: athletics will have a roof over its head and a slightly reduced programme from 4 to 6 March 2011, for the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Paris-Bercy. However, it intends to make the most of the occasion to push back the walls and broaden its horizons. To support these three days of competition, the French Athletics Federation has set up a programme of entertainment inside as well as outside the POPB, both during the event and throughout the preparations. Indeed a series of original and sometimes revolutionary initiatives have been lined up, designed as much for the spectators of the European championships as the general public. Here are the details:

Twenty-five years of athletics at Bercy
The youngest among you are sure to be unaware of the fact that athletics was one of the first sports to push open the gates to Paris Bercy’s Palais Omnisport. In January 1985, 11 months after Jacques Chirac inaugurated the Parisian enclosure, IAAF organised the World Indoor Games there. Since that time, the POPB has rolled out the track a number of times, both for national championships and one-night events. However, it has only played host to two other major international competitions, the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 1994, then the World Indoor Championships three years later.

The lowdown on indoor
On the evidence of historians, indoor athletics began in London, on a February evening in 1863. Prehistoric times as it were. Since then, there have been all manner of developments, its regulations have changed and its practice has often been disrupted. At a little over seventy days until the European Athletics Indoor Championships in Paris-Bercy (4 to 6 March 2011), it’s not too late to evoke a few principles and clarify the fact that indoor is not outdoor, though at times it seems similar.

With or without snow
With less than three months to go till the European Athletics Indoor Championships (4 to 6 March 2011), the French capital has been covered in a blanket of snow for the past two days. This cold snap, which is dishing up some very wintery conditions, is also affecting a large part of Europe. With such climatic constraints, it’s not easy for the athletes to thoroughly prepare for the next European Indoors in Paris-Bercy. How are they going about it? Are they all suffering its effects? We get the answers from the respective coaches of four of the most eagerly awaited athletes due to perform at the European Indoors : Russian Yelena Isinbayeva (pole vault), English athlete Jessica Ennis (pentathlon) and Frenchmen Romain Barras (heptathlon) and Christophe Lemaitre (60m).
