The Palais Omnisports Paris Bercy (POPB) is a multi-purpose venue located boulevard de Bercy, in Bercy’s area, in Paris’s 12th arrondissement. Surrounded by the Bercy Park and the Ministry of Finance, the venue is located on the right-bank of the Seine, where the Bercy Bridge is, and faces the Francois-Mitterrand Library located at the left-bank.
Built in 1984 with a surface area of 55.000 m², the venue is pyramid-shaped. His particularity is based on walls covered with sloping grass. The venue is modular and can be adapted according to any sports events or shows; the capacity is 18 000 people maximum depending on the event! Many additional rooms and an ice rink make the organisers proud of it.
The most popular French and foreign artists sang there (Depeche Mode, U2, Pink-Floyd, Metallica, Madonna, Johnny Halliday, Indochine, Mylène Farmer, Michel Sardou…), and almost all sports competitions took place there : Martial Arts, Basketball, Boxing, Track cycling, horse-riding, Gymnastics, Moto-cross, Ice-skating, Tennis, Volleyball and even Ski and Funboard!
Athletics in Bercy:
Athletics was organised for the first time in the POPB in 1985 for the World Indoor Games (now known as World Championships). In 1994, the World Indoor Championships were organised as well as the 1997 Athletics World Championships. For several years, the French Athletics Federation has organised a meeting in which compete the best World athletes.
With the European Athletics Indoor Championships in 2011 a big indoor championship is back in Bercy.
